This is YOUR opportunity to be part of a fast growing business.  WE NEED team players/partner(s). Owner is looking to personally “slow down, then retire” in the next year or sooner. This is NOT an offer from a recruiter or business broker. This is direct with owner.

  • #1. BASE MANAGER JOB DESCRIPTION:
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills. Hands on up to skill level, BUT, Proficient enough to direct Mechanic and recognize when particular mechanic and job are not a good fit.
  • Deadline oriented.
  • Ability to recognize priorities key to keeping the business “running smoothly
  • Is an excellent communicator.

General Duties:

  1. Keep boats running and looking good
    1. Develop and maintain Best Practices for boat maintenance schedules.
    2. Log (as spreadsheet) of milestones (such as engine hours, monthly, etc.) to carry out work and/or inspections as required. For Electrical, Plumbing, Mechanical, Rigging, Safety (All USCG required items such as flares. fire extinguishers, horns, etc) Hull, Gelcoat (all other “appearance” items).
    3. Supplies: Acquired and kept on hand as needed.
    4. Work with captains to develop “Ownership” mentality of boats and to support your job with timely reports made easy to fill out/follow through on.
    5. Work: Scheduled and performed or overseen as required.
    6. Repairs/Replacement as needed (All Rigging should be part of maintenance schedule as “Inspection of”) and maintain a list (Currently Trello) of needed boat repairs such as:
      • Plumbing: Joker Valves, Pumps (Shower, Fresh Water, Bilge, etc),
      • Electrical: Lights, Switches, Gauges, Wiring (tracing and diagnostic as needed) Correct past faulty repairs (mostly bad mounting or wire splicing and connections. Alternators, Starters, Etc.
      • Mechanical: Coolant and raw water flow,
      • Running Rigging. Replace frayed/weak lines, Rope Clutches, Blocks Etc.
      • Standing Rigging: Inspection for rust, wear, missing fasteners, etc.9. Hire and oversee professional repair techs as needed.
      • Jobs over $500 to be OK’d by Owner. (Based on tech’s estimates).
  2. Develop and maintain “Best Practices” for all aspects of Captains’ Responsibilities.
    • Equipment use and reporting of areas of concerns (Safety, Reliability Comfortable).
    • Boat inventory Check List (Signed off by Captains each week).
    • Management of online (Trello) boat fix lists. (Access to Trello? To be discussed).
  • II. KEEP THE CUSTOMERS/STUDENT HAPPY
  1. Keep Owner informed – Weekly, or as needed.)
  2. The Base Manager is the eyes and ears of both the Owner and Office Manager
    • Use: Trello, phone email and text messaging.
    • Chase down and/or corner Owner if necessary.
  • #2. MECHANIC:
  • Strong mechanical aptitude with previous marine skills. Either professionally or through extensive maintenance/restoration of your own boat(s).
  • Knows marine mechanical, electrical, plumbing, rigging, some fiberglass/gelcoat, woodworking helpful
  • Deadline oriented
  • General Goal: To keep boats trouble free (as much as a boat can be, that is).
  • #3. Partner(s):
  • V.I. Sailing School Started out as my “Hobby Job” and turned into a serious business with sales in the 7 figures. At the same time, I the owner and founded; ordered, modified and completed (in May of 2022) my new boat. I was looking forward to semi-retiring and working (teaching), but only when I had students with a particularly adventurous streak (as I will be based among the islands of the West and South Pacific).
  • I am very flexible when it comes to talking about selling the school, anywhere from a simple turnkey purchase, to partnership, to the employees taking it over. My only two goals are:
  • #1. To be relied upon less time wise. And…
  • #2. Not giving it away, except possibly to employees who have earned it by keeping it successful with minimal time from me.
