Passport and Visa Requirements

If you are a U.S. Citizen, you do not need a passport to travel to and from the U.S. Virgin Islands, but will need one to enter the BVIs.

Ground Transportation | Getting Around Once You’re Here

Taxis are available from St Thomas airport to Virgin Island Sailing School; the fare is approximately US $15 for the 20 minute trip. FYI, we drive on the left, so take care when crossing the street. Your U.S. or foreign driver’s license is accepted should you wish to rent a car (although there is little need to do so.) Seatbelts while driving are the law and so are cell phone earpieces, plus we like our guests to stay alive.

Weather

The temperature averages 78°F (25°C) in winter (December through March) and 83°F (28°C) in summer (June through August), with consistent, easterly trade winds of 5-15 knots that keep the humidity lower than on most other Caribbean islands. Squalls happen, but the sudden wind and rain rarely lasts more than 10 – 15 minutes. In summer, warm rains may last a day or two at a time, and we close during hurricane season from August through October.

What to Bring
  • YOUR PASSPORT (for sailing to islands beyond the USVIs)
  • Barefoot is how we roll, but if you must, boat shoes or athletic shoes with white or light-colored soles work swell
  • Sandals or flip flops
  • 2-3 bathing suits (you’ll live in these)
  • 1 or 2 pairs of shorts
  • Lightweight clothes for dining out (button-ups and shorts for men, sundresses for women –  “classy casual” is the norm)
  • A lightweight rain jacket and a pair of long pants
  • Sun-protection | Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt
  • Sailing gloves (we have a few extra pairs if you need them)
  • Medications and travel-sized toiletries
  • Favorite music and something to play it on
  • Snorkeling equipment is provided but you can bring your own
  • Electrical current is U.S. standard 120 volt so no adapters needed
Cell phone and Internet Access

Most U.S. carriers have reception here, but ATT is the carrier of choice. Check with your provider prior to departure to determine if there are special plans available for voice and text while in the USVIs and the BVIs.

You’ll have internet access from the boat about half the time, usually in the evenings, and on pretty much any island with a bar (which is pretty much any island.)

Currency

U.S. dollar. ATMs are widely available, and most shops and restaurants accept credit cards, most commonly Visa and MasterCard.

Time Zone

Atlantic Standard Time. In Spring and Summer we are on the same time zone as the Eastern U.S., but we don’t “Fall back” so in Autumn and Winter we are an hour ahead.

Official Language

English. With a Caribbean accent, mon.
